You are NOT Dumb, you probably just lack the prerequisites

For a long time, I thought I was behind. Everyone around me seemed to get programming faster than I did. They'd read an error once and know what to do, while I stared at the same screen for an hour. I figured some people were just built for this, and I wasn't one of them.

Turns out, that wasn't it. I was trying to learn things that sat on top of things I never learned. I wanted to build APIs without really understanding how a request travels across the web. I copied async code without knowing what was actually waiting on what. Of course it felt impossible. It's like opening a book at chapter ten and wondering why the story makes no sense.

When I finally went back and filled in the gaps, the boring stuff, the basics, the “hard” things stopped being hard. I wasn't dumb. I was just missing steps.

Now, with AI that can write most of the code for you, it's tempting to skip the basics completely. I get it. But AI gives you answers. Your foundation is what lets you tell whether the answer is right, fix it when it breaks, and ask the right question in the first place. The stronger the tools get, the more the fundamentals matter.

I realized this way too late. So if you feel behind right now, you're probably not dumb either. Go back a few steps, find what you skipped, and keep going.
